Whitewater Rafting
Otters Den owner, Wynand Uys, was instrumental in developing whitewater rafting on the Blyde and Olifants Rivers for guests' African safari package. Liaising with co-operator Steve Hardy of Hardy Ventures and with the Southern African Rivers Association (Now African Paddling Association), safety standards were developed and guides were trained for this African safari package.
As a result the Blyde Canyon has become one of the best known rafting destinations in South Africa and the Olifants Gorge section is fast gaining the same popularity. Include this on your African safari package.
Equipment
Otter's Den River Lodge makes use 2-person 'Croc Rafts' made By African River Craft for their African safari package. These forgiving boats are ideal for our river conditions, from the mild Lower Blyde to the challenging Blyde Canyon.
Participants paddle their own boats (2 per boat) and guides go along in their own craft. Each participant is issued with a buoyancy aid, a helmet and, of course, a two-bladed paddle.
Abseiling
Otter's Den River Lodge has access to abseil sites from 25 to 60m high in the Blyde Canyon, the Olifants Gorge and a fabulous granite pinnacle at Sorabi Rock Lodge near Mica. Winter is the best time for abseiling in the Lowveld. Minimum group size: 4. Maximum group size for this African safari package: 12
Angling
Otters Den River Lodge encourages catch and release, but guests are welcome to keep a fish or two for consumption in the camp.
